Public Health Warning - the TTIP

Whilst looking out for UFO's; whilst speculating on the possibility of Alien presence on earth; whilst fearing immigrants, do not neglect to remember the TTIP....then start mulling over how Big Business is effectively running our lives;

One of the main aims of TTIP is the introduction of Investor-State Dispute Settlements (ISDS), which allow companies to sue governments if those governments’ policies cause a loss of profits. In effect it means unelected transnational corporations can dictate the policies of democratically elected governments.

TTIP is a drive to the lowest common denominator between the laws which currently exist in the EU and the US combined with the creation of an unaccountable executive branch committed only to the interests of corporations. This means the workers in both areas will be on an accelerated race to the bottom, able only to compete on the basis of slave wages.

"We never had a choice before. We don’t have one now. But it’s refreshing that our rulers now openly demonstrate that they understand that they have successfully potty-trained the population into being too stupid and lazy to care."

"The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is a series of trade negotiations being carried out mostly in secret between the EU and US.
As a bi-lateral trade agreement, TTIP is about reducing the regulatory barriers to trade for big business, things like food safety law, environmental legislation, banking regulations and the sovereign powers of individual nations.
It is, as John Hilary, Executive Director of campaign group War on Want, said: “An assault on European and US societies by transnational corporations.”

It will cost at least 1 million jobs, undermine our most treasured public services, lead to a ‘race to the bottom’ in food environmental and labour standards and, for the first time, allow US companies to sue the UK government in special courts.

THE THREE PILLARS OF TTIP

DEREGULATION

TTIP IS NOT A TRADITIONAL TRADE AGREEMENT DESIGNED TO REDUCE BORDER TARIFFS ON EXPORTS. WITH TARIFFS BETWEEN THE EU AND US ALREADY AT MINIMAL LEVELS, THE STATED AIM OF TTIP IS TO REMOVE REGULATIONS THAT ACT AS ‘BARRIERS’ TO CORPORATE PROFITS.

Yet these ‘barriers’ are in reality some of our most prized social standards and environmental regulations such as labour rights, food safety rules (including on GMOs), regulations on the use of toxic chemicals, digital privacy laws and even new banking safeguards introduced to prevent a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis.

PRIVATISATION

TTIP will boost corporate profits by opening up public services and government contracts to the private sector and ‘locking in’ privatisations that have already happened.
Companies such as Virgin are already running front line health care services as a result of the Health and Social Care Act 2012. Health services are included in TTIP and NHS privatisation will be irreversible if the deal goes through. The same holds true for education, water and environmental services, as well as for any hope of renationalising the railways. Under TTIP, privatisation is for ever.

CORPORATE COURTS

  • Dutch firm Achmea successfully sued the new government of Slovakia for reversing an unpopular health privatisation.
  • Canadian company TransCanada is suing the USA for $15 billion for stopping a tar sands pipeline in the name of climate change
  • Swedish company Vattenfall is suing the German government for €5 billion over its decision to phase out nuclear power by 2022.
  • Veolia is suing the Egyptian government for loss of profits as a result of the country’s decision to raise the minimum wage.
  • US company Lone Pine is suing Canada for the ban on fracking in Quebec.
“The harmonization of food standards is particularly concerning. Under the deal food products include chemically washed poultry, livestock treated with growth hormones, and genetically modified crops – all allowed in the US – could be sold in the UK.”

On both sides of the Atlantic, elected parliamentarians are only allowed limited access to information about the negotiations, while around 600 ‘corporate advisors’ have full access to this information.

This is happening now. There has never been anything quite like this before except in the pages of science fiction novels. This is probably one of the evilest of things we as a race have encountered. It must be stopped.
