The Thief of Rage - Hindsight and Foresight - The Mixed Gifts of Politics (Cameron, Clegg and the Coalition)

The one thing the UK coalition has proved beyond any doubt is that we Brits are incapable of having effective coalition governments. Nick Clegg’s recent statement also proves what I have long believed: modern day politicians are gifted with hindsight but not with foresight. The former is a talent we all have the later the one we need. It strikes me that all these ‘confessional’ type statements are contrived. They seem engineered to present a man capable of saying sorry having made a mistake. This is all very noble and forgiveness is an act near to godliness but after a while it appears to be nothing more than a calculated attempt to win back votes. As a long standing Liberal I yearn to have, even if a seriously flawed individual, someone like Charles Kennedy as leader of the party. He may have been, and still is presumably, an alcoholic, but he wasn’t a ditherer. Nor was Paddy Ashdown. The other issue I regret is when Tony Blair and Paddy Ashdown met to discuss the possibility of the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties merging. Blair was never a true Red blooded socialist. He was far more Liberal, Tory at times, than his predecessors. If only the two parties had formed a cohesive whole what a party that would have been. But here I am illustrating perfectly the worthless gift of hindsight.
